Prothom Alo by Sunil Gangopadhyay - Bengali Book Review

Prothom Alo is a Bengali novel by Sunil Gangopadhyay.I feel it is one of the classics & must read by every Bengali reader.Based in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century in Calcutta, the story is interspersed with history and fiction.

Apart from a fictional main leads of the novel,  Rabindranath and Noren ( Later Vivekananda) are key characters .Robi's relationship with Kadambari and Vivekananda relation with Nivedita, apart from many other incidents in their lives makes them very humane and real.

Another very interesting line that the story follows is that of the independent kingdom.of Tripura,King Birchandra and his successor, their way of life, their interest in literature, music and art.

The novel  captures the ethos of Calcutta as it was in those days and transports the reader into a different world of Arising patriotism, intellectual thoughts, development of new wave of education. Bengali 's unwavering love for literature, arts and adda.

With a fictional tone the story takes us through the lives & moments of many important great men & women of that era.It brings us close to the revolution in theatre, education, Business, Literature happening all around during that period. We come across several legends like Jyotirindranath, Jagdish chandra Basu, vidyasagar, Girishchandra etc. At the same time it gives an insight into women's position in those days even in relatively modern Calcutta and the changing times where by some women get exposed to Education and equity.

I am not a regular Bengali reader and my yearly foray is only into shardiya Desh.So I ventured into a full fledged Bengali novel after long. But this book was a class apart and rekindled my love for reading in Bangla. The book captures and flows through the golden era of Bengali literature & culture.
